What made you choose this institution over all others? Did the university exceed your expectations?

The community ! Lots of different people, I reside at the Brantford Campus, so it’s a smaller community. And yes, this university did exceed my expectations.

Do you have any lingering thoughts or regrets in your year as a whole (ex; application process, mistakes going into first year). If so, describe them.

I wish I was more social.

Briefly describe the academic rigour of your program (in terms of competitiveness, courses, professors, etc.)

At Laurier, we have a 12 point GPA scale. Some professors are not as welcoming or accepting as others, but it’s all about how you interact with them.

Describe the social life at your campus based on your own experiences (making friends, clubs + extracurriculars, party culture etc.)

Because it is a smaller campus, it is a tight knit community. It’s easy to make friends! There are not a lot of parties, but there are definitely lots of student events !

What are some of the best and worst parts of your university experience so far?

The best part is being independent and living on my own, for sure. Overcoming obstacles by yourself without the help of others is definitely a big feat. The worst part would definitely be the stress of exams and stuff, but it definitely has to do with study habits.

List effective study techniques and/or habits:

  1. Write down due dates/exam dates

  2. Keep track of what you have studied

  3. PACE YOURSELF !!

  4. Write good notes during class, leave your phone at home if you can, or shut off and in your bag

  5. For one hour of studying, try to take a 15 minute break!

  6. Don’t cram!

List three pieces of advice for first-year students:

  1. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there

  2. Your profs are your friends! get to know them, don’t be afraid to ask for help

  3. There are lots of resources on campus (whether it is for mental health, academics, etc). Take advantage of these!
