International Management at University of Ottawa
Deana (Year 2)
What made you choose this institution over all others? Did the university exceed your expectations?
My program requires me to study a semester abroad and thought this would be a great opportunity!
Do you have any lingering thoughts or regrets in your year as a whole (ex; application process, mistakes going into first year) If so, describe them.
Ottawa is unfortunately 4 hours away from home, and I did not realize how big of an issue that was until I actually became a student there. To me, it is personally a big reason why I feel like I couldn’t fully enjoy my first year, but I still tried to make the most out of it and made lots of friends which helped me almost feel like I’m at home!
Briefly describe the academic rigour of your program (along with course grading, professors etc.)
In comparison to some other business schools, I’d say uOttawa is easier than most. However, being easier does not decrease its value! The school still provides lots of opportunities for students to start their journey to becoming professionals. I have noticed that in all my courses, each professor is different and sometimes it’s in a good way, but oftentimes not. Again, this is not a bad thing as it has honestly taught me to be more independent and adaptive to different learning environments.
Describe the social life at your campus based on your own experiences (making friends, clubs + extracurriculars, party culture etc.)
Some people say that your frosh friends don’t become your close friends during the year, but I completely disagree! I met my entire group of friends from a frosh event and we are planning to live together in the coming years too! Another great way to branch out would be by getting more involved in school activities, as you can meet others with similar hobbies and also reach out to those in upper years who can give some valuable advice for the future. Party wise, some schools are definitely more known for their parties than others, but it’s really what you make of it!
What are some of the best and worst parts of your university experience so far?
The worst part of my experience was definitely the homesickness I constantly felt during my time there. I came to realize that being so homesick really affected my performance in school and in social situations sometimes too. At the same time, the best part was that I made great friends who were always super supportive, and being so far away gave me an opportunity to be more independent!
